The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is warning travellers about continuing protests in several locations across Hong Kong. This includes rail stations and the Hong Kong International Airport. These protests pose an extra risk to travellers and have the potential to disrupt travel plans. This page provides an overview of how the Hong Kong Protests may affect your travel insurance.
If you are looking to purchase a policy
You may purchase a policy to cover your trip to Hong Kong, but it is important to note that you won’t be covered for any claims arising directly or indirectly from the Hong Kong protests. This includes claims for related medical expenses, cancellation, travel delay and missed connecting flights.
If you purchased your policy and booked your trip before 6 August 2019
Claims related to the Hong Kong protests will be covered provided that the claim being made falls within the scope of cover offered by your policy, and the regular policy terms and conditions are met.

There are some important things to note:
- Our policy cover for cancellation and curtailment doesn’t apply in cases of civil unrest.
- As per your policy schedule, cover will not apply when travelling to an area marked “Do Not Travel” by DFAT. As of 30 August 2019, the official DFAT advice for Hong Kong is “Exercise a high degree of caution.” If advice is raised to “Do Not Travel” please contact us to discuss your policy cover.
If you purchased your policy or booked your trip after 6 August 2019
There will be no cover for any claims arising directly or indirectly from the Hong Kong protests. This includes claims for medical expenses, cancellation, travel delay and missed connecting flights.
This is because our policies exclude cover for claims related to any circumstance which could reasonably have been foreseen as likely to give rise to a claim at the time a policy was purchased, or a trip was booked. 5 August 2019 is the date beyond which we would expect those booking travel or purchasing cover to be aware of the unrest in Hong Kong.
